Why this manual, and why me
I graduated from massage school in 1987 and have billed insurance for most of my career — workers’ comp, motor vehicle collisions, and health insurance. Washington required carriers to cover massage back in 1996, which put me on the front lines of insurance billing before most of the profession knew it was possible.
I learned it the hard way: by trial and error, with no roadmap. I wrote the first edition of this manual in 2005 so that no one else would have to. This is the 4th edition — updated, expanded, and current for 2026.
